Twyford is a village near Winchester in Hampshire within the western boundary of the South Downs National Park. According to our Wikipedia entry, mentions of Twyford were recorded as early as 963. Twyford is within the boundaries of Winchester City Council, and of course Hampshire County Council, as well as being under the South Downs National Park Authority.

Events in Twyford

There is almost always something going on in Twyford; you can see a range of events in our calendar. The events over the course of the year include regular open days at Twyford Waterworks.

Twyford Parish HallVillage Facilities

The village has a number of community facilities as well as shops and pubs. The Parish Hall is the venue for a number of groups (see below) and is also available for hire. Hunter Park, owned and run by the Parish Council, has a pavilion with a community room (and kitchen) that is available for hire; a cricket pitch and football pitch also bookable via the Parish Clerk, as well as tennis courts and playground; besides being a favourite for local dog walkers.

The Parish Council also own Berry Meadow and the Watermeadows adjacent to the River Itchen, both open to the public – with educational visits available on request.

 

ShopShops & Pubs

Twyford has two excellent pubs – The Bugle and The Phoenix serving food and local ales. At the heart of the village is the Twyford Post Office & Stores, with the Bean Below restaurant.

The Twyford Social Club is a member-run club in Queen Street with a large function room that is available for hire.

Twyford has a surgery and a pharmacy located on Hazeley Road plus a dentist.

St Mary the Virgin Church

St Mary’s seeksSt Mary's to be a living Christian presence at the heart of the community, providing a vibrant place of worship, spiritual hope and peace, where God’s love can be shared with all. Details of the work of the church, clergy and services can be found HERE

The present church was dedicated in 1878 and remodelled in 1996 to include church rooms, toilets and kitchen facilities. The original Walker organ was recently rebuilt details of which can be found at www.twyford-organ.com .

The church has close ties with the local primary school Twyford St. Mary’s Church of England Primary School, including some foundation governors elected by the Parochial Church Council.

Education & Children’s groups

Twyford is home to Twyfords St Mary’s C of E Primary School and the independent Twyford School. For younger children there is also the Twyford Playgroup, and for accompanied babies and toddlers there is the Twyford Tots group that meets 10-12 on Wednesdays at the village hall.
